When Jesus lived as a man upon the earth, He defeated the devil in the wilderness (Matt 4:1-11), He calmed stormed filled waves on the sea (Luke 8:22-25), stilled violent winds (Mark 4:38-40) and walked on water (John 6:18-20).

He taught and fed multitudes (Matt 14:13-21), healed all who came to Him and freed any who were oppressed by demonic influence (Mark 6:55-56 / Matt 8:16-17). He caused the lame to walk, the blind to see, the deaf to hear (Matt 11:4-5).

He raised the dead (Mark 5:35-42 / Luke 7:14-16 / John 11:38-44) and He turned water into wine to help at a Wedding! (John 2:7-11). If Jesus life was just the earthly life He lived, it would still be full of the miraculous! (John 21:25).

John 20:30-31 (Amplified)
There are also many other signs and miracles which Jesus performed in the presence of the disciples which are not written in this book. But these are written (recorded) in order that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ (the Anointed One), the Son of God, and that through believing and cleaving to and trusting and relying upon Him you may have life through (in) His name [through Who He is].

In one of these powerful events recorded for us, we see how Jesus calmed a storm which was frightening the disciples (Mark 4:35-41).

These men were well seasoned fishermen, not easily prone to fear of the waves of the sea and high winds. For it would have been a common experience in the lives of these men when at sea.

However, on this occasion the disciples appear to have been terrified when this storm struck. Perhaps something about this storm was different? It’s clear they were deeply afraid and believed that it was about to take their lives (Mark 4:38).

Yet Jesus lay sleeping in the same boat while the disciples were crying out. I have often wondered how Jesus could sleep at such a time, just as the men of the boat must have thought.

We read that the boat was fiercely battered by waves pouring over the vessel, and that it was completely filling with water (Mark 4:37). So, why did the boat not sink at this point? That would be the expectation for a submersed vessel and yet it was still afloat.

Then Jesus rose up and commanded the winds and the waves to be still, and the storm ceased the moment He spoke (Mark 4:39). The disciples were stunned at the authority they saw exercised though Jesus, that even the winds and the waves obeyed His voice (Mark 4:41).

He turned to the disciples asking “Where is your faith?” (Mark 4:40). I believe He said this to remind them that He was with them in the boat, and of the fact that He had already said that they would reach their destination (Mark 4:35), so they could trust Him to keep His Word.

This makes me think of all the times in my life when I have been anxious and upset at the ever changing situations of life, feeling as though I was in a ‘boat of overwhelming circumstances’ that was often ‘submerged’ and yet, by God grace and mercy, it did not sink!

Lamentations 3:21-25 (GNT)
…..hope returns when I remember this one thing: The LORD’s unfailing love and mercy still continue, fresh as the morning, as sure as the sunrise. The LORD is all I have, and so in Him I put my hope. The LORD is good to everyone who trusts in Him.

When Jesus is in our boat, we do not need to fear the sound, sight or feelings of any situation that we may be in. The Lord of all Creation lives within every believer, therefore you and I can command even our own situation to ‘be at peace’ through the power of Christ in us (Eph 1:13).

For in Jesus you and I are able to exercise His authority in love and blessing (Eph 1:18-20). God’s desire is that we do more than just survive ~ He empowers us to thrive ~ so that we can live our lives to His honour and glory (Heb 13:20-21).

Jesus is our joy, He reigns forever, His saving power is open to all, His love never changes, for He is God’s Son. He is The Mighty One who has been given to the world, because God loves us so much (John 3:16-17).
